Poetry Returns to Art on the Prairie November 11-13

After a two-year hiatus, poetry returns in a big way to Art on the Prairie on Nov. 12-13. Art on the Prairie is a two-day festival in historic downtown Perry, Iowa, celebrating art, music, literature and the joys of small-town living. During these two days, attendees will enjoy a full schedule of poetry activities, featuring readings by Iowa poets, workshops for adults and children and open mic time in Studio on Second, presented by the Iowa Poetry Association and Poetry &.

Advanced registration is required for the following events. Registration opens Oct. 15 and will close once seating or time allocations are filled. To register please send an email with your name and contact information to ipa@iowapoetry.com with:
      Ekphrastic in the subject line for the Saturday workshop.
      Student in the subject line for the Sunday workshop, appropriate for second grade through high school.
      Open Mic in the subject line for the Sunday event. Readers for open mic may read four to five poems (around five minutes)
      Student Open Mic in the subject line (grades K-12)

IPA Sponsors First Poetry Slam Competition Nov. 11

The Iowa Poetry Association is excited to share a new opportunity for spoken word and slam poets! Spoken word and slam poetry continue to establish themselves as powerful forms, and we're happy to announce the IPA Poetry Slam as our search for an Iowa champion.

IPA will host a series of poetry slams across the state between November 2022 and May 2023. The top 3 poets at each slam will be invited to the final stage at Poetry Palooza in Des Moines in early April. The winner of the IPA Poetry Slam final stage will go on to represent Iowa at the NFSPS Blackberry Peach National Poetry Slam in June 2023 in Des Moines!

The first slam competition will take place on Friday, Nov. 11 as part of Art on the Prairie. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held at the Gamble Block Brewery in Perry. Advance registration is suggested. For those who would like to participate, send an email to ipa@iowapoetry.com with Slam Entry in the subject line by Friday, Nov. 4.

November's IPA LIVE will be filled with excitement and announcements about poetry happenings near you! Learn more about IPA Poetry Slam competitions, three of them, between Nov. 11 and May 2023. You'll hear from IPA's competition slam co-chairs Kelsey Bigelow and Laura Johnson. Also, learn more about the return of poetry to Art on the Prairie taking place in Perry on Nov. 12 and 13. Jan Kaiser from Beaverdale Books and Dawn will be on hand to share the details and the schedule. In April, a new two-day poetry event will take place in Des Moines called Poetry Palooza. Event organizers will be on hand to share the line-up of poets as well as the schedule of events. Zoom in on Weds., Nov. 9 from 7-8:30 p.m. for IPA LIVE.
